An inventory for the property now known as Ley’s Farm, was carried out in 1684 following the death of Henry Tetley (1637-1684), whose occupation was given as a potter, and with 4 pot wheels recorded in the workshop, it is likely he was employing staff to operate these.

Private Charles Percy Topham and Sergeant Percy Riley have been included in the same publication as they are connected through adoption. Both were tragically killed in action.

Alonza Charles Platts joined the Royal Leicestershire Regiment in 1918 then registered with the 1st Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and went to India with them in 1924 at the age of 23. He also served in WW ll being promoted to Lieutenant in 1941.

Coal mining continued until 1862 at Heath End when there was a gap of 11 years before John Lancaster opened his coal mine in 1873 (covered in a separate publication).

A total of nine men were involved in the burglary at William Sherwin's hosiery warehouse in March 1824 but the story focuses on a man by the name of William Walker who received a sentence of 14 years transportation for his part in the crime.

After a lengthy period of inactivity in the mining of coal in the Heath End area, workings were restarted in 1873 by John Lancaster & Co.

Lount Pipe Works was located in the parish of Coleorton. It was thought to have opened in the early 1900s, and was initially owned by the Lount Brick and Sanitary Pipe Company.

THE AUTHOR

My interest in local social and industrial history in Coleorton, and surrounding villages in North West Leicestershire, began following my retirement.

I received my early education at the primary and junior schools in Griffydam where I took the 11+ at the latter before moving to Ashby Boys Grammar School.

My descendants roots are well established in Pegg's Green, Coleorton, Lount and Griffydam. In fact, a male blood line for the Stewart's goes back from my sons to the late 1600s in Lount.
